The discussion surrounding a potential guardianship issue can be difficult for many families. Pursuing guardianship over an adult (called the "ward"), whether he or she is elderly or disabled, may be greatly disputed among members of a family, friends of the individual in question or between interested parties and the individual themselves.

In some situations, a guardianship over an adult (the ward) must be established in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the ward. These adults, who are incapable of caring for themselves, may have reached that point due to a variety of reasons, including age, physical disability, mental disability, mental illness, dementia or drug addiction. The ward may require the intervention of a loved one or friend to ensure their needs are being met and that they are able to thrive as fully as possible.
When exploring the option of guardianship over an adult, many different questions must be answered, including:
